১৮০৫ সালে Francis Beauford (Irish Hydrographer) এই স্কেল প্রবর্তন করলেও ১৮৩০ সাল থেকে প্রাতিষ্ঠানিকভাবে এর ব্যবহার শুরু হয়। সাধারণত কোন স্থানের (Sea/Land) বাতাসের অবস্থা (calm, light, fresh breeze, strong breeze etc.) বুঝানোর জন্য Beauford Scale ব্যবহার করা হয়।  এই স্কেল ০ থেকে ১২ পর্যন্ত ১৩টি ভাগে বিন্যাস্ত।

পরবর্তীতে (১৯৪৬ সাল) এই স্কেলকে ১৩ থেকে ১৭ পর্যন্ত বর্ধিত করা হলেও আন্তর্জাতিকভাবে ০ থেকে ১২ পর্যন্ত স্বীকৃত। তবে কিছু কিছু জায়গায় যেমন তাইওয়ান এবং চীনের কিছু স্থানে বর্ধিত স্কেল ব্যবহার করা হয়।নিচের টেবিলে Beaufort Scale এর মান এবং মানগুলোর ব্যাখ্যা পর্যায়ক্রমে দেয়া হয়েছে।

7	Near Gale	50-61	32-38	28-33	Whole trees in motion; inconvenience felt when walking against the wind.
8	Gale	62-74	39-46	34-40	Twigs break off trees; generally impedes progress.
9	Strong Gale	75-88	47-54	41-47	Slight structural damage (chimney pots and slates removed).
10	Storm	89-102	55-63	48-55	Seldom experienced inland; trees uprooted; considerable structural damage
11	Violent Storm	103-117	64-72	56-63	Very rarely experienced; accompanied by widespread damage.
